Are you looking for the best motorcycle lock for your bike? We all want to keep our belongings safe, and especially our motorcycles. There is nothing more infuriating than walking back to your bike and noticing it missing. Just to be stranded somewhere with no way to get back home.
Luckily enough we can make it difficult for all the would-be criminals. Even a bad lock can shy away all casual thieves from even trying. For the more hardened criminals, there are high-quality locks available.
And I got an extra special trick for you. Most hardened criminals walk around with one, or maybe two tools for breaking locks, searching for locks they can break and bikes they can steal. The interesting thing is that if you use two locks, one proper lock and one cheap budget lock of a different kind, most criminals will pass your bike. The chances of any thief carrying exactly the tools to break open both locks are low and just the hassle of two locks make a lot of them look for an easier bike to target.
Your motorcycle will never be 100% safe, but luckily you can get close.
What to look out for
Firstly, buy a known brand. There are a lot of new brands around these days which produce locks of unknown quality. Some of those locks are made very cheaply in unknown countries, sometimes not even using steel. Known brands have decades of experience, and a reputation to hold high. When it comes to the best motorcycle locks there is one brand that truly stands out, Kryptonite. Kryptonite has been making motorcycle locks for over 40 years, and I can fully recommend them. This best-of list still contains other brands of course, but I highly recommend the Kryptonite locks.
Secondly, you have to consider weight. If you want to take a lock with you, then you probably want it to be lightweight for easy carrying. The downside is that additional security makes locks heavier. The stronger a material is, the heavier it is in most cases. And when you want top-notch security, you will need to walk around with 0.5 inch thick reinforced steel chains. Those chains are very heavy. So there is a trade-off between weight and how strong the lock is.
Thirdly, where are you planning on parking your motorcycle? If you park it mostly indoors or in very safe areas, just a simple lock will scare all would-be-thieves away. If are planning on leaving your motorcycle outdoors during the night in the city, you will need one or possibly multiple very strong locks.

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-Lock Review
The Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-Lock is the best motorcycle lock hands down. Made by Kryptonite, the Fahgettaboudit is the best motorcycle chain lock you can find. It is easily put around one of the wheels, and without the lock, not easily removed at all. The 14 millimeter (0.55 inch) hexagonal triple heated steel links can withstand up to 16 tons of cut force. It includes a nylon webbing to prevent scratches, and quite simply keeps your bike safe.
The shackle itself is made of 18 millimeters (0.7 inches) steel, and can endure even more abuse than the rest of the chain. Together the shackle and chain weigh a nice 15.25 pounds. Not something you can fit in your pocket easily, but at least you can use it for weight training.
The Fahgettaboudit comes in two editions, a 39 inch and a 60 inch version. I recommend selecting both to compare the prices, as when last time I looked the 60 inch version was cheaper than the 39 inch version.
Overall this simply is the best motorcycle lock you can buy. I highly recommend it for anyone who has to park their bike in not so safe places.
Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit key specs
- 14 millimeter (0.55 inch) triple heated manganese steel
- Available in 39 inch and 60 inch versions
- New York 18 millimeter (0.7 inches) MAXPerformance Disc Lock as shackle
- Nylon webbing to prevent scratches
- 25 pounds of security (60 inch version)
Kryptonite Series 4 Disc Review
The second best motorcycle lock is the Kryptonite Series 4 Disc. The Kryptonite Series 4 Disc is basically the Fahgettaboudit without the chain. The shackle is slightly worse than the shackle that comes with the Fahgettaboudit, but in exchange for that, you pay a lot less as well.
The Kryptonite Series 4 Disc consists of 14 millimeters (0.55 inch) hardened steel with a double deadbolt locking mechanism. The anti-drill and anti-pull cylinder protection system is reinforced, leading to a top notch lock overall. The Series 4 Disc is coated in vinyl making it both waterproof and extra secure.
You have to keep in mind that this lock goes through the rotor of your motorcycle brake. You can’t use this lock to lock your motorcycle to anything itself.
Kryptonite Series 4 Disc key specs
- 14 millimeter (0.55 inch) durable steel
- Lock for your brake rotor
- Reinforced anti-drill and anti-pull cylinder protection system
- Double deadbolt locking mechanism
The Club UTL800 Utility Lock Review
The Club Utility Lock is one of the most popular budget motorcycle locks. Although my warning about buying unknown brands still stands, the Club Utility Lock seems to be the best option among lesser known brands. And it is the only real option at its price.
The Club Utility Lock weighs about 4 pounds and can withstand roughly 1500 lbs of pressure. It won’t stop any serious criminals, but it can scare some of the casual thieves away. Its length is adjustable from 13.75 inch up to 20.25 inch. In order to protect your motorcycle from scratches, the lock has been coated in vinyl.
Overall the Club Utility Lock is easy to use and the best choice at its price. I strongly recommend you to consider buying one of the Kryptonite locks above instead, as they offer a lot more protection. But if you are on a tight budget, and live in a low crime area, the Club Utility Lock is a solid choice.
Club Utility Lock key specs
- Adjustable from 13.75 up to 20.25 inch
- Weighs about 4 pounds
- Withstands up to 1500 lbs of pressure
- Vinyl coating to protect your motorcycle from scratches
- Weather resistant
Kryptonite Keeper 5s Disc Lock Review
The Kryptonite Keeper 5s is one of the cheapest Kryptonite locks you can find. With that, it isn’t going to prevent a hardened criminal from stealing your motorcycle. But if you place it in a low crime area, it will deter most casual thieves easily. The Kryptonite Keeper 5s has a dual reinforced high-security disc style cylinder with a 5 millimeter pin (0.2 inch) to use on smaller vent holes. Compared to the other locks it is very compact and lightweight. With that, you can easily take it with you wherever you go.
The Kryptonite Keeper 5s is very visible, which deters casual thieves from even approaching. Furthermore, it comes with a small bag, for easy traveling. The lock also comes with a reminder cable, so you don’t have to buy one separately.
Overall the is the Keeper 5s a nice budget pick, especially in a low crime area or as a secondary lock.
Kryptonite Keeper 5s key specs
- 5 millimeter pin (0.2 inch) that fits smaller vent holes
- Compact and lightweight
- Includes a pouch and reminder cable
Trimax T665LY Hardened Metal Disc Lock Review
In the last place, there is the Trimax Hardened Metal Disc Lock. It is one of the most popular motorcycle locks around, and one of the most affordable motorcycle locks as well. The Trimax Disc lock has a 10 millimeter pin (0.4 inch), and is made resistant against most cutting, sawing, and chisel attacks.
It is an easy to use one-push button lock, although it doesn’t always work smoothly. A carrying pouch and a reminder cable are both included as well.
The overall quality is a bit lacking. Although the lock is strong, the locking and unlocking mechanism doesn’t work too smoothly and it may break down at some point in time. Although the pin is 10mm, the quality of metal seems to be worse than the steel found in Kryptonite locks. I wouldn’t recommend using this lock alone to protect your motorcycle, but it can be a very cheap way of deterring the casual thief. Also, check beforehand if the Trimax is going to fit on your motorcycle disc brake.
Trimax Metal Disc Lock key specs
- 10 millimeter pin (0.4 inch) that fits most disc brakes
- Compact and lightweight
- Includes a pouch and reminder cable
