Best Motorcycle Helmet Lock 2017 – Reviews & Buying Guide

Your helmet is the most important part of your motorcycle gear. Good helmets tend to be quite expensive, yet they are worth every penny of their price. While motorcycles can be easily locked, it isn’t always as easy to keep your helmet with you or put it somewhere safe. In this article, I’ll review the best motorcycle helmet locks I could find.

What to look out for

First off, what kind of helmet do you have? If you have a full face helmet it would be best to buy a lock with a strap or cable. Single carabiner locks can usually only hold a strap, and with a full face helmet, it is a lot more secure to put the cable through the helmet rather than just around a strap.

Secondly, do you mind keeping a lock with you at all times? Some people do, other don’t. If you don’t want to carry a lock around, either buy a very small lock or a lock that is attached to your motorcycle itself. The Bikers Choice Helmet Lock is a good example of a lock that is permanently attached to your bike.

Lastly, you get to choose between buying a lock with a key and buying a lock with a pin. Keys tend to be slightly more secure, but you risk the chance of losing them. Also, pins can be forgotten if you use the lock only very occasionally, so be careful with that.

BigPantha Motorcycle Helmet Lock Review

bigpantha motorcycle helmet lockThe BigPantha Motorcycle Helmet Lock is one of the most popular helmet locks available. It uses a three digit pin for locking and unlocking, which makes it very easy to use. The lock itself is made of a strong carabiner combined with a 6 feet braided steel cable.

When not in use the cable automatically rolls itself up so you can easily put the lock into your pocket. Furthermore, the steel cable has a thick layer or protective coating so you won’t scratch your helmet or motorbike and the cable won’t rust either.

Besides being a good motorcycle helmet lock, thanks to the 6 feet long braided steel cable you can use it to lock pretty much anything. Which is always handy if you arrive somewhere with a suitcase you have to leave unattended for a little while.

Overall the BigPantha helmet lock is an easy to use, lightweight, waterproof, multipurpose lock. It doesn’t have any downsides, and besides that it is pretty cheap as well. Which is why I consider the BigPantha the best motorcycle helmet lock available right now.

BigPantha Helmet Lock key specs

  • 3 digit pin lock
  • 6 feet braided steel cable
  • Self-coiling cable
  • Rubberized carabiner and coated cable

Bikers Choice Helmet Lock Review

bikers choice helmet lockThe Bikers Choice Helmet Lock is securely attached to your motorcycle handlebars. It fits all bars from 7/8 inch up to 1 1/4 inch and is attached with tamper-proof screws. The lock itself is chrome plated and comes with two keys for locking and unlocking.

It’s quite easy to operate the lock, and it is very secure nonetheless. One of the major upsides of the Bikers Choice Helmet Lock is that you don’t need to carry the lock with you all the time. It is already attached to your bike after all.

This lock does come with a downside, however. When a lock is firmly attached to your motorcycle with tamper-proof screws, thieves won’t be able to remove it. And neither will you. You can purchase some regular screws separately in order to try out different locations, but once you use the included tamper-proof screws it won’t be possible to remove the lock anymore.

Bikers Choice Helmet Lock key specs

  • Key lock (with 1 spare key)
  • Attached to the handlebars (7/8 to 1 1/4 inch handlebars)
  • Tamper-proof screws
  • Very strong chrome plated lock
  • Don’t need to carry it with you

Helmetlok II Motorcycle Helmet Lock Review

helmetlok ii motorcycle helmet lockThe Helmetlok II is a 4 digit carabiner lock with a rubber protection coating. The four digit code makes it more secure than the BigPantha, but also makes it slightly more inconvenient to use. It doesn’t come with a strap attached, so if you want a strap as well you will need to buy it separately or go for the BigPantha instead. However, with most motorcycle helmets you won’t need the strap anyways.

The main benefit of the Helmetlok II is that it is so easy to put away. It always fits in every pocket, and you can even just leave it hanging from the handlebar. Furthermore, it is made from stainless steel with a zinc alloy finish, making it a strong enough lock for locking your helmet with.

Overall the Helmetlok II simply does its job well. There are no big downsides or weak points in the helmet lock, which makes it a decent product overall.

Helmetlok II key specs

  • 4 digit pin lock
  • Rubberized carabiner
  • Stainless steel with zinc alloy finish
  • 100% waterproof
  • Weighs 2.4 ounce

Master Lock Motorcycle Helmet Lock Review

master lock motorcycle helmet lockIf you are on a very tight budget, the Master Lock is the best motorcycle helmet lock you can buy for its price.  The Master Lock comes with two keys and a 12-inch cable. The lock itself is very sturdy and the cable is 0,15 inch (5 millimeters) thick. The cable is covered in vinyl and the lock itself is covered in plastic in order to prevent scratches on your helmet.

The main downside of this lock is the length of the cable. The seller lists the strap as being 14 inches, while 12 inch seems to be closer to the truth. Depending on where you want to lock your helm, 12 inches may not be enough. For example, if you try to tie the cable around a wheel you will most likely find out it isn’t long enough.

Nevertheless, if you find a good spot to use the lock it is a decent helmet lock for a very affordable price. If you’re on a tight budget I would recommend getting the Master Lock motorcycle helmet lock.

Master Lock Helmet Lock key specs

  • Key lock (with 1 spare key)
  • 12-inch vinyl covered cable
  • Lock covered in plastic to prevent scratching your helmet
  • Cheapest motorcycle helmet lock yet still a decent product

Lockstraps 901 Helmet Lock Review

lockstraps 901 helmet lockThe Lockstrap 901 consists of a heat-treated steel 3 digit pin carabiner combined with a heavy duty nylon strap. The nylon strap has a 0.1 inch (3 millimeter) stainless steel cable embedded inside for additional strength. When using the Lockstrap 901 it is the easiest to pull the nylon strap through the visor opening. If you are planning on using a D loop, it may not fit because the nylon strap is quite thick.

What I like most about the Lockstrap 901 is that it is a pretty cheap lock. It will deter most thieves away, and even if they do try to steal your helmet they will have to fumble their way through the 3 digit pin. The biggest downside of the Lockstrap 901 is that the lock itself isn’t 100% lock pick proof. By listening very closely to the sounds, the lock makes when changing digits a thief may be able to determine the correct code. Not many thieves will try, though.

Overall I think the Lockstrap 901 is a decent budget option that will deter most thieves away. The lock strength is okay, and few thieves are patient enough to listen to sounds which is its weak point. So if your helmet isn’t that expensive, the Lockstrap 901 might be the way to go.

Lockstraps 901 key specs

  • 3 digit pin lock
  • 2 feet nylon strap with embedded stainless steel cable
  • Easy to use
  • One of the cheapest helmet locks
  • Weak against lock picking by sound
