Best Motorcycle Chain Lube 2017 – Reviews & Buying Guide

After having written my article about the best motorcycle chains I figured to write an article about the best motorcycle chain lubes as well. Chain lubes cost only a fraction of what good motorcycle chains cost, yet they can help your chain run smoother and last way longer. Therefore, it is a good idea to clean and lube or wax your chain regularly.

Besides that, the performance of a motorcycle chain lube depends not only on the lube itself but also on factors such as your local climate and your driving style. Some lubes and waxes are better in dusty areas than others, and so on.

What to look out for

Not all lubes and waxes are perfect for all driving styles and chains, so there are a few things to keep in mind. While almost all chains and lubes are water resistant, not all of them are dust resistant. If you sometimes ride off-road, you will have to get yourself a dust resistant motorcycle chain lube. Even if you just ride through dusty areas every so often, it’s better to use a dust-proof wax or lube.

Some motorcycle chain lubes are better for certain motorcycle chain ring types than others. Although all the lubes and waxes in this list are perfect for O-rings, and will generally do just find on non-o and X-rings, some other lubes may not. Putting a wrong kind of lube on your motorcycle chain might ruin it, which is one of the reasons I picked some of the more generally safe lubes and waxes.

Lastly, you’ll have to clean your chain before applying the lube, and should be cleaning it somewhat regularly anyways. If you don’t have a cleaning tool already for that, I can recommend this one from Amazon, which I also wrote a short review about at the end of this article.

DuPont Teflon Chain-Saver Dry Self-Cleaning Lubricant

dupont motorcycle chain lubeThe DuPont is the most popular motorcycle chain lube right now. There are a few reasons for its immense popularity. Firstly, it’s cheap. Secondly, it’s very easy to use. It doesn’t stain, it is water resistant, and it should be applied without any water. Basically, you have to just spray and let it dry for an hour. That’s all there is to it.

Thirdly, it is actually a very good product. It’s safe for all types of chains, including O-rings and X-rings. It can withstand temperatures up to 300 degrees F, and is used in a wide variety of settings, not just motorcycle chains. And when it comes to motorcycle chains, it is one of the best motorcycle chain lubes you can buy.

Overall, this is one of these cases where the most popular product is also one of the very best products, if not the best product.

Maxima 74920 Chain Wax Review

maxima motorcycle chain waxMaxima Chain Wax is a spray based lubricant made specifically for motorcycle chains. It works with both normal chains and O-ring chains, and it can protect the sprockets as well. One of the most noticeable features of the Maxima Chain Wax is that it keeps the chain very clean. The Maxima Chain Wax is based on paraffin, which is a lot like kerosene. Much like kerosene, it is highly flammable, but it also helps to keep your chain both clean and frictionless. It is one of the most popular chain lubes and has one of the highest rating averages as well.

Maxima Chain Wax comes in a wide variety of bottles, ranging from 5.5 ounces all the way to 162 ounces. It’s priced pretty competitively, and definitely worth trying out. Overall it is a solid choice for anyone who doesn’t want to use the DuPont motorcycle chain lube.

PJ1 13oz Blue Label Motorcycle Chain Lube

PJ1 motorcycle chain lubePJ1 chain lube is made specifically for O-ring motorcycle chains. Its manufacturer focuses on both water resistance (for increased durability) and friction removal (for increased performance). It’s based on petroleum and is in that regard more like the Maxima than the DuPont motorcycle chain lube. It lasts long, and the 13-ounce version is priced competitively. There is also a 5-ounce version, but that one costs almost as much as the 13-ounce version at the time of writing this article. So if you are looking for a very small bottle, you may be better off with the DuPont motorcycle chain lube.

For some people, the PJ1 is the best chain lube they ever bought, and overall most people are very satisfied with PJ1. It certainly deserves its place among the best motorcycle chain lubes, and especially if you use an O-ring chain, give it a shot!

Lucas Oil 10393 Chain Lube Penetrant Aerosol

lucas oil motorcycle chain lubeLucas Oil is one of the big brands when it comes to motorcycles, and they also have their own chain lube formula. It is made for all kind of motorcycle chains, including X-rings and O-rings. The Lucas Oil Chain Lube is one of the lubes that penetrates deeply into the chain and pins. On the one hand, this removes some friction and keeps the internals of the chain well protected. On the other hand, this may cause some flinging, which means that when you drive fast, some of the chain lube will end up getting flung against your bike. So keep in mind to check your bike a few times after applying the lube to clean off any lube that got flung against the main body of your bike.

The Lucas Oil Chain Lube comes in a single bottle (11 oz) version and a 12 bottles pack. The 12 bottles pack is actually surprisingly cheap at the time of writing, but unless you are planning on giving them away to friends or using them every 5 miles I wouldn’t know why you would want 12 bottles in the first place. Still, even for a single bottle, it is a very solid deal.

Lucas Oil Chain Lube key specs

  • Penetrates deeply into the chain and pins
  • Made for all types of chains and ring types
  • Water resistant

Motul Factory Line Chain Lube Review

motul motorcycle chain lubeThe Motul Chain Lube is designed for both road racing and endurance racing. As such, it has been made mainly with performance in mind. The Motul Chain Lube lowers friction the most of all the lubes. This, in turn, leads to the best driving performance possible. The main downside, however, is that the Motul Chain Lube is not dust resistance. So don’t ride off-road with it, and it is better to avoid dusty places in general. Furthermore, the Motul Chain Lube is compatible with all common motorcycle chains and ring types.

Overall, this is the lube you should use if you are into racing, and definitely not into any kind of off-road biking. It does a very solid job when used correctly, so if you aren’t visiting any dusty places, the Motul Chain Lube is the way to go.

  • Made for all types of chains and ring types
  • Water resistant
  • Not dust resistant, don’t use it off-road

Cycle With Style – Multi-purpose Motorcycle & Bike Chain Cleaning Tool

cycle with style motorcycle chain cleanerIf you are going to apply chain lube or wax to your motorcycle chain, you’ll want to clean the chain first. If you don’t happen to have a cleaning tool lying around already, I can recommend the CWS motorcycle cleaning tool. It’s popular, cheap, and highly rated. It’s pretty durable, so if you want to clean your chain with it regularly then that is no issue either. You can also clean the gears with it, and it is surprisingly easy to use.

Overall, it’s quite simply a good motorcycle chain cleaning tool. If you don’t have one already, get it, if you already have one, don’t get it.
